Pipeline Maintenance

Repairing a Mainline Leak

A large portion of the District's pipelines were constructed around the 1950's or earlier and are approaching the end of their service life.

Maintenance personnel respond in teams to repair leaks in the distribution system and perform maintenance procedures to ensure optimal water flow and pressure for domestic customers as well as for fire suppression.

  • 198 Miles, mostly constructed from 1950-1980
  • Diameters: 2-inches up to maximum of 42-inches
  • Majority are 6-inch and 8-inches in diameter
  • Significant amounts of 4-inch and 12-inch pipe
  • Standard pipeline materials
    • Ductile iron
    • Cement mortar lined & coated (CML&C) steel
  • Other existing pipeline materials
    • Asbestos cement pipe transite
    • Cast iron pipe (CIP)
    • Polyvinyl chloride (PVC)

A pipeline rehabilitation/replacement program outlined in the 10-year Capital Improvement Program assigns a risk factor to each pipe in the system and determines when the pipeline should be replaced. Each project is prioritized with estimated costs.
